Let’s chase the Northern Lights in Greenland!
Get ready for an adventure straight out of your wildest dreams—watching the magical Northern Lights, or Arsarnnerit in Greenlandic, as they dance across the Arctic sky! This is your chance to experience one of the world’s best spots to witness this incredible natural light show, right where the solar wind meets the Northern Pole.
We’ll stay at the Qaleraliq Glacier Adventure Camp or the cozy Tasiusaq Hostel, both offering crystal-clear views with zero light pollution. By day, we’ll cruise through fjords sparkling with blue-tinged icebergs and explore jaw-dropping glacier tongues. Imagine sleeping at the edge of a glacier, waking up to surreal views, and even trekking across the mighty Inlandis Ice Sheet, navigating its dazzling crevasses and icy formations.
We will also dive into the fascinating history of Greenland’s Norse settlers and the Inuit cultures that have shaped South Greenland for over a millennium. Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Qassiarsuk and Igaliku regions, where Viking and Greenlandic farming history come to life.
This isn’t just a trip—it’s an epic blend of nature, culture, and history you’ll never forget.
Day 1: 9/16
Viking Greenland
Welcome to Greenland! Your final flight destination is Narsarsuaq, which you can get to via Keflavik International Airport or Copenhagen (flight date dependent).
We will meet at the airport and transfer in a RIB boat through Tunulliarfik Fjord, usually covered by icebergs, to Qassiarsuk. Together, we will walk through the village of about 50 inhabitants and where Eric the Red settled in 985.
We will take a guided visit to the original ruins from Erk the Red and a replica of the original chapel and longhouse. This Norse and Greenlandic farming area were in inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2017, under the title Kujataa Greenland: A Norse and Inuit farming landscape on the Edge of the Ice Cap.
Accommodation: Hostel
Day 2: 9/17
Narsaq & Qaleraliq Galcier Camp
Today, we set off for Qaleraliq camp, navigting along the Tunulliarfik Fjord. We will stop in Narsaq to visit the third most populated town in South Greenland, with a population of about 1500 people.
You will have free time to visit the local market, shops, or go for a long walk before boarding the boat again to navigate towards the Indlandis.
We will arrive to a cozy, enchanting camp set on a sandy beach. This contrasts with a spectacular view of the three glacier fronts from Qaleraliq’s glacier.
We’ll spend the night at camp, enjoying the unbelievable views and the roars from serac icefalls.
Accommodation: fix tents
Day 3: 9/18
Ice Cap View
Today, we will ascend to the base of Tasersuatsiaq great lake and to get a panoramic view of the Inlandis. We will be hiking through the unique desert-like sand valley which will lead us to a surprisingly different landscape, that of the green and thick tundra. After passing the lake, we will climb up a mountain 400 meters high, from which we will have a mesmerizing view of one of the largest lakes in Southern Greenland.
The summit is also a very special viewing point of the Indlandis, the immense inland glacier. From there you can gaze upon the infinite ice sheet up to the north coast of the island and towards the Arctic Ocean, and see the Nunataks, floating landmarks on the ice sheet. We may pick mushrooms and blueberries, and look for caribou, which are plentiful in the area.
Accommodation: fix tents
Day 4: 9/19
Glacier Fronts & Excursions on Ice
For today’s adventure, we will navigate along the glacier fronts on a RIB boat, admiring the beauty of their vertical ice walls and numerous icebergs as we approach them along their more than 10 kilometers descent to the sea.
From there we will start the ice excursion. On this trek we will use crampons on one of the oldest masses of ice in the planet. We will explore its crevasses, drains, seracs, and other ice formations, which give an incredible, labyrinthine quality to this glacier.
An expert mountain guide will be in charge to make sure we are provided with the appropriate equipment, and to ensure the safety of the group during the trip. On this excursion, he will share with us his knowledge about the special characteristics of the glaciers in the South of Greenland.
Accommodation: fix tents
Day 5: 9/20
Igaliku & Qooroq Ice Fjord
We will start with an easy hike to cross the Kongevejen, or Path of the Kings, to the idyllic Igaliku, a small Inuit settlement inhabited by just under 40 people. It is famous for being the most beautiful settlement in the whole Greenland and where we’ll find the ruins of Gardar, the archdiocese and religious capital of Viking Greenland, the Norse bishop’s farm – the largest in all of Greenland- and the setting of Anders Olsen’s farm, the unique architecture of the Igaliku stone houses. The area is recently declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage List
After eating in Igaliku we will return in the afternoon to Itilleq, and then to Qassiarsuk.
On our way to Qassiarsuk, we will visit the Qooroq Fjord, where one of the most active glaciers in southern Greenland can be found. This area is where the iceberg density will make it impossible to carry on, and which is without doubt one of Greenland's best images.
Accommodation: Hostel
Day 6: 9/21
Icerberg’s Bay
Our start for today will be a walk to Tasiusaq farm, a community of just seven people living in notable isolation next to Sermilik fjord. This area is almost always blocked by the ice and icebergs coming from Eqaloruutsit glacier.
This is not the only sheep farm of the area. We will continue our walk to Nunataaq Farm, a Viking Settlement where we can discover some ruins.
On this excursion, we will have views of Tasiusaq Bay and the numerous icebergs covering it! We will discover lakes hidden in the tundra.
Later, we will make our way back to Tasiusaq Farm and from there, possibly go fishing for arctic salmon or take a kayak excursion.
Accommodation: Tasiusaq or Qassiarsuk Hostel
Day 7: 9/22
Flower Vally & Glacier
After crossing to Narsarsuaq on our zodiac boat, we will walk through Flower Valley. It is aptly named because of the spectacular view of the valley formed due to the retreat and the consequent glacial sedimentation that allows wildflowers to grow.
We will walk until we can see Kiattut glacier and the landscape around it, a panoramic view of the ice sheet and its Nunataks. This is probably the most renowned excursion in all Greenland.
Tonight, we will have our farewell dinner, with typical local Inuit products.
Accommodation: Hostel
Day 8: 9/23
Time to say goodbye!
In the morning, we will transfer to Narsarsuaq. You will have time to walk around in the area and visit the local museum Bluie West that reflects the history of the creation of the village of Narsarsuaq from the past, especially its role played in the Second World War. You can ascend to the "View Point", an easy hike of approximately one hour that starts near the hotel. From the view point, you will have views of the fjord, the Narsarsuaq plain and the Kiattut glacier.
We hope you enjoyed your adventure to Greenland with us! We can’t wait to see you on another trip!
